Inspired by the Hong Kong neighbourhood of Tai Hang (大坑), this album takes the verve, interesting niches, and cultural richness of the area and puts them into a set of songs celebrating this unique place.

Nestled between the mountains, harbour, historic Victoria Park, and bustling Causeway Bay, Tai Hang offers a relatively quiet pace, along with a bohemian and cosmopolitan nature, compared to the relentless capitalism of other areas in urban Hong Kong.

DJ Fabsabs created this mixtape for the release of FINGERGAP’s “Shan Shan 160” (also on Holunjeng Records), with the challenge of making his own style of music at the fast pace of 160bpm and in the genre of Juke and Footwork.

For Fabsabs, a DJ who plays funk, disco, world grooves, hip hop and funk, it was an unusual test, but one that he certainly relished. Taking grime, jazzy, and funk beats and baselines, Fabsabs upped the speed to 160bpm, while adding his own blend of rock, psychedelic, Eastern traditional music, and African rhythms.

Inspiration was provided by the likes of Miles Davis, Flying Lotus, Weather Report, Blood Wine or Honey, Sun Ra, Alice Coltrane, Daedalus, Fela Kuti, Ukandanz and Tal National.

What he created certainly wasn't footwork or juke, but something more free and undefinable. Enjoy!
